Yolanda L. Hinton has been named AMC’s 2008 Black Engineer of the Year. A mechanical engineer with ARL since 1980, she presently works in the Vehicle Technology Directorate located at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA. Hinton has conducted research on the applications of acoustic emission, acousto-ultrasonics, and infrared thermography to detect defects and damage in composite materials; nonlinear acoustics for measuring fatigue damage in metal structures; and electrical potential methods for structural health monitoring. |
She has authored or co-authored more than 35 technical papers and presentations and has represented the Army on technical working groups and panels.
Hinton holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in mechanical engineering from MIT. She spent two years as a consultant at Norfolk State University’s Department of Engineering, helping to establish the optical engineering degree and the master’s degree programs and teaching courses in mathematics and dynamics.
Hinton’s community service has included working with the Cooperating Hampton Roads Organizations for Minorities in Engineering, managing scholarship fundraisers for area youth pursuing science and engineering degrees, and judging science fairs and similar competitions.
Maj. Gen Fred D. Robinson, Jr., RDECOM commander, recognized Hinton during a Special Tribute to Education at the National Black Engineers awards gala on 16 February. RDECOM Command Sgt. Maj. Hector G. Marin presented Hinton with a Special Recognition Award for her community service activities. |
