The U.S. Army Materiel Command (AMC) is the Army's principal materiel developer. Headquartered at Fort Belvoir, VA, AMC accomplishes its mission through nine major subordinate commands that direct the activities of numerous depots, arsenals, ammunition plants, laboratories, and procurement operations. AMC is in about 150 locations worldwide, covering 45 states and nearly 40 foreign countries. Staffing these organizations is a work force of about 50,000 dedicated employees, many with highly developed specialties in weapons development and logistics.
AMC's mission ranges from the development of sophisticated weapons systems and cutting edge research to maintenance and distribution of spare parts. AMC:
- Overhauls and upgrades thousands of pieces of Army equipment.
- Produces and provides bombs and ammunition for all the military services.
- Provides on-the-ground logistics assistance to every unit in the Army, including new equipment training.
- Maintains the Army's prepositioned stocks on land and at sea.
- Researches, develops, and acquires conventional ammunition for all of DoD; and food, clothing, battledress, and other individual items and equipment for soldiers.
- Stores and destroys U.S. chemical weapons stockpiles.
- Manages billions of dollars in annual Foreign Military Sales in security assistance to our allies.
- Supports acquisition of billions of dollars worth of end items and parts for more than a thousand weapon systems.
To develop, buy, and maintain materiel for the Army, AMC works closely with industry, colleges and universities, the sister services, and other government agencies to ensure that state-of-the-art technology and support are exploited for the defense of the nation. But AMC also touches every soldier in the Army every day by working directly with units in the field to identify and resolve maintenance and supply problems impacting readiness and provide feedback on actions taken to alleviate those problems.
AMC additionally participates in various humanitarian and disaster relief efforts both at home and abroad. Besides providing equipment and supplies, AMC establishes and manages distribution centers in the affected areas to expedite supply and delivery to victims.
AMC stands for quality in all it does. Its driving force is always service to the soldier. From helmets to helicopters, AMC supports every soldier in every unit every day.
